sexual slavery

sexual slavery:

freedom from the flesh trade

“Generating an estimated $32 billion dollars annually, human trafficking is the fastest-growing criminal activity in the world today. It is also the most lucrative.”       - Kate Transchel, GlobalPost

The UN figures between 800,000 and 4 million men, women and children are deceived, recruited and sold into slavery every year: 80% for the flesh trade.  Sexual slavery targets women, as well as young girls and boys, and is a transnational issue we can’t afford to ignore.  Held by debt bondage, illegal confinement, physical and sexual abuse, and the threat of being reported to authorities, these individuals are subjected to the worst human rights offenses.

Even just considering an issue of this overwhelming scale and taboo subject, it’s easy for us to close our eyes and pretend the problems don’t exist.  But they do, and they’ll only get worse without our commitment to be part of the solution.  PSP will show how each of us can get involved in these issues in safe, constructive, and inspiring ways, by learning about the incredible work of grassroots organizations across Asia that are dedicating to eradicating the sale of human beings for sexual slavery.

Status: Filming completed in India, still fundraising to film in Cambodia and Thailand!

Budget: $49,030 including production, post-production, and distribution to communities and schools

Who will benefit from the project?

  1. Documentary participants

  2. Documentary participants will have the opportunity to fully express their experiences, acting as a therapeutic outlet as well as a constructive one that will help to shape NGO programming and garner support for programs that are working to protect and prevent women and children from entering sexual slavery, as well as programs that help those who are caught in its vicious cycle.

  3. Grassroots NGOs

  4. Grassroots NGOs working on issues of sexual slavery will be provided this documentary free of charge, to use as a fundraising tool that will demonstrate the importance of programs like theirs.  Even if not working in the same geographic area where filming takes place, the documentary will be produced to be non-exclusive and relevant to a wide range of relief organizations all over the world.  We hope that they will use this to reach new donors, send with international grant applications, and raise awareness on the issues of sexual slavery and the solutions their organization offers.

  5. Canadian classrooms

  6. After this documentary is finished, PSP will produce curricula guides and teachers kits to accompany this film to make it a relevant teaching tool for grades 1-12.  These will be available free of charge, both online and in print.

  7. General public

  8. PSP places all its documentaries online for the world to view free of charge, and holds community screenings.  A resource guide on how to hold your own screening of the film will also be developed and placed online free of charge.

Filming Locations: South and Southeast Asia
