psp talk at green school in bali

Today PSP gave a presentation to over 100 kids at Green School in Bali! We talked a bit about what we do and then screened the Malaysia film to the kids, who range in age from 5-15. Feedback on the screening was great, and we look forward to answering any additional questions the students may have! Thanks so much for having us, Green School! We couldn’t ask for a better environment in which to talk about paradigm shifts!

Here’s what we’re fundraising for:
Due to the interconnectedness of our world these days, the global response to natural disasters is becoming an important key to mobilizing humanitarian relief aid. From the recent earthquake in Haiti, to earthquakes in Indonesia, Pakistan and China, to hurricane Katrina and the 2004 tsunami, natural disasters seem to be happening not only more frequently, but also with increased severity. But unlike natural disasters of the past that garnered little international media attention, today’s natural disasters are featured front page, and touch the lives of people watching the six o’clock news all over the world. And with these images of destruction comes an overwhelming desire to support these communities affected, although most of us are unsure of how we can really best help the situation.

The Paradigm Shift Project wants to dig deeper, and answer the question, how can we most effectively respond as global citizens to natural disasters around the world?. We want to examine the different roles that local and international organizations play in responding to natural disasters, and document survivors’ accounts of what kind of relief aid programming has been most effective for their community. We want to share with global audiences what really happens on the ground after natural disasters, and most importantly, how each of us can most effectively contribute to the relief efforts.

Malaysia is one of Southeast Asia's most developed nations, and yet, is home to some of the most marginalized children in the world, whose rights are far from recognized or upheld. These children are stateless, refugees, and/or street kids.

It has been estimated that there may be as many as half a million children between the ages of 6 and 18 who roam Malaysia's streets every night. And the UNHCR has counted 18,600 refugee children. In the red light district of Chow Kit and other neighbourhoods in Kuala Lumpur, many of these kids are at risk of sexual abuse, imprisonment and deportation, and human trafficking.

A small percentage of the stateless are illegal immigrants from Indonesia and the Philippines, whose families have fled to Malaysia in search of better economic opportunities, but over 90% of these children are Malaysians without papers: children born out of wedlock are still not recognized as citizens. Others are refugees from Myanmar’s ongoing genocide and conflict, not recognized as asylum-seekers by the Malaysian government. Without adequate legal protection, these youth are all too often completely neglected by government institutions and programs.

These youth face a host of social issues including violence, drug abuse, poverty, and sexual abuse, and are continually failed by a lack of education, social support, and a justice system that often even perpetuates these cycles of abuse. Most live in fear everyday for their security.

In this film, The Paradigm Shift Project documents these issues, and the solutions local NGOs are implementing to address these issues, as well as how we can all help give these children the rights they are entitled to.

We'd like to share with you The Paradigm Shift Project's next project, called Voicing Disaster, which will begin this coming June in Padang, Sumatra.

But unlike natural disasters of the past that garnered little international media attention, today’s natural disasters are featured front page, and touch the lives of people watching the six o’clock news all over the world. This will be the first piece of its kind, and with your support, this valuable information will have an impact on the way we give aid to natural disasters all around the world.

As with all our projects, every penny makes a tremendous difference! Here are some examples of how far your donations go:

$1 = 1 finished DVD to send to local NGOs
$10 = 1 Teachers' Resource Kit, to help teachers use the film in classrooms all over the world to educate students.
$25 = Photo reproductions for all participants in the film
$50 = 10 hours of editing!!!
$75 = 1 day of filming, including food and accommodation for our volunteers.
$100 = The cost of translating our interviews to produce a bilingual film.
$150 = Our website costs for a year!
$500 = All the hardware needed to produce the film, like external hard drives.
$1000 = An honorarium for 3 months of full-time work for a volunteer!
