Sue Allen is a professional tractor trailer operator, a certified fleet driver trainer and examiner, and a transportation specialist for film and television productions. Ms. Allen, also an equity and diversity specialist, designed and coordinated programs to encourage women to train in the skilled trades at Centennial College's School of Transportation in Toronto, and developed and implemented The Women's STOP (Skilled Trades Opportunities Program) at the College to recruit and train more women to apprentice in motive power trades. Ms. Allen has recently been appointed to serve on the Appointments Council and Transition Board for the new Ontario College of Trades. Ms Allen is also steadfast in her work and passion to end violence against women everywhere, and is a long time writer and performer of music. She is currently at work on a non-fiction book on women in skilled trades.
avis maher, treasurer
Avis Maher attended Queen's University, where she received a Bachelors of Science in Engineering degree and an MBA. Avis is a Chartered Accountant, with experience in both the private and public sectors. She holds the position of Chief Financial Officer of Conestoga College in Kitchener and in her free time, she enjoys outdoor activities ranging from gardening to hiking to long-distance running. Avis believes in the power of education and its ability to bring about positive change.
jessica dionne
Over the past ten years, Jessica Dionne has shown a sustained commitment to community and development issues whether in Canada or abroad. In her late teens, she worked on community-based projects in Costa Rica with Youth Challenge International. Later, she worked for UNICEF in Québec raising awareness on children’s rights, poverty and HIV/Aids in elementary and high schools throughout the province. In 2004, she went to Malawi as a CIDA intern and worked with Malawian youth to raise awareness on HIV/Aids. She has also worked, volunteered and studied in Latin America, Asia, Africa and Europe. She holds an MA from the University of Guelph, Canada, in History and International Development. She is currently a PhD candidate at the School of Oriental and Africa Studies (SOAS) in London, England. Her current research examines the history of public health and health workers in Mozambique.
georgia marman
Georgia Marman graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a BA Honours in Anthropology/French and eager to learn more about the anthropology of development, resistance and power, social movements, and Mexico’s maquiladora industry. She pursued these interests via an MA in Anthropology and Collaborative International Development Studies at the University of Guelph. Her fieldwork was conducted in Tlaxcala, Mexico on women’s participation in the maquiladora industry. Post MA, she worked for a year at an NGO in Cordoba, Argentina dedicated to gender-based urban planning/public space issues and then for three years at the Maquila Solidarity Network (MSN) in Toronto, an advocacy organization determined to improve working conditions in the garment industry. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Anthropology at York and her upcoming field research will explore the international struggle against the development of the Pascua Lama gold mine in northern Chile by Canadian mining company Barrick Gold.
yvonne reitmeier
Yvonne Reitmeier is a Mathematics and Science teacher, who is currently the Head of the Science Department at Rosseau Lake College, in Rosseau, Ontario. Prior to becoming a teacher, Yvonne was a campaigner for Earthroots, an environmental organization in Toronto, Ontario. Yvonne’s educational campaign on the Niagara Escarpment was widely featured in print and radio media and had a positive impact on escarpment conservation efforts. During her time at Earthroots, Yvonne was also a member of the Board of Directors of CONE, Coalition on the Niagara Escarpment, a local lobby group, committed to protecting the escarpment from urban sprawl and inappropriate development.
